Amethyst
Amethyst is one of the most popular and indeed one of
the most common crystals. It is found worldwide from the UK through the USA to India and
Africa.
Amethyst is a variety of quartz and the name comes from the Ancient Greek
word for intoxicated. This is due to the fact that it was believed that the stone protected the wearer from
drunkenness. In fact the Greeks and Romans made drinking cups from amethyst to ward off getting drunk! In
medieval times European soldiers wore amulets made from amethyst to protect them in battle.
Amethysts beautiful colour is due in the main to the ferric iron impurities
within it.
Amethyst is the traditional birthstone
for February.
